IN A JOINT effort to restore the habitat of the endangered Philippine eagle, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) and Globe Group have announced the launch of the “Planting for the Future” program. This ambitious initiative aims to plant 3 million trees, marking a significant step forward in conservation efforts.

Led by the PEF, the program will focus on the restoration of the Philippine eagle’s natural habitat while also addressing broader climate change and sustainability challenges. “Planting for the Future” will involve the propagation and selection of seedlings, maintenance of mature trees, and fostering stakeholder collaboration.

The initiative is set to rehabilitate 1,200 hectares of degraded land near nine Philippine eagle nesting sites across four provinces of Mindanao. These efforts will not only benefit the Philippine eagle but also act as carbon sinks, contributing to climate change mitigation.

Moreover, the program will provide at least 150 jobs for partner communities, particularly indigenous peoples, involving nursery care, planting, maintenance, and monitoring operations. These communities will also receive reforestation training from PEF and additional livelihood opportunities from fruit-bearing trees.

To ensure transparency, the program utilizes a comprehensive database and tracking system accessible to funders. This system provides real-time updates on the progress of adopted plants, enhancing accountability and stakeholder engagement.

Individuals can support the program through donations via Globe’s platforms, including GCash and soon, the GlobeOne app. Globe customers can convert their Globe Rewards points into donations, and donations can also be made via Paypal.

Through “Planting for the Future,” PEF and Globe aim to not only restore the habitat of the Philippine eagle but also engage the public in conservation efforts, emphasizing the importance of collective action in protecting our environment.
