In a powerful display of solidarity, 5,000 climate advocates in the Philippines have called on world leaders at the Climate Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, to take bolder actions in the fight against global warming and prevent temperatures from rising beyond 1.5°C.

As COP29 enters its two-week negotiation period, the summit is expected to focus on ramping up global climate action and setting ambitious climate finance goals. “The Philippines, as one of the nations most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, must play a central role in these discussions,” said Ian Rivera, National Coordinator of the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ).

“From Typhoons Yolanda, Odette, and now Kristine, the country serves as a stark reminder for developed nations to uphold their historical responsibility by increasing climate finance. This is vital to address mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, and to accelerate the transition away from coal and fossil fuels toward renewable energy.” (Photos by Jann Conrad Bonifacio)
