This groundbreaking institution is set to be a pivotal force in developing the island’s medical workforce and addressing the region’s healthcare challenges.

The inauguration ceremony was led by several key figures, including Governor Sharee Ann Tan, Congressman Reynolds Michael Tan, Tingog Partylist Congressman Jude Acidre, SSU President Redentor Palencia, former SSU President Marilyn Cardoso, and CHED Regional Director Maximo Aljibe.

Governor Tan delivered a powerful message, emphasizing the lasting impact of the institute.

“The Samar Island Institute of Medicine is not only the realization of a long-held dream, but also a crucial investment in the future of Samar. This is a commitment to ensure that our people will have access to quality healthcare and education,” she remarked.

Congratulating the collaborative efforts of local and national leaders, Congressman Reynolds Michael Tan highlighted the significance of SIIM as a key driver of local development. SSU President Redentor Palencia discussed the institute’s academic objectives, while former SSU President Marilyn Cardoso reflected on the personal pride she felt in seeing the initiative come to fruition.

The launch of SIIM is a monumental step for Samar, as it establishes the first-ever College of Medicine on the island, which will serve the entire Samar province. CHED’s Regional Director Maximo Aljibe praised the institute’s creation, calling it a vital contribution to the national goal of decentralizing medical education.

In a remarkable announcement, RD Aljibe shared that 16 students would be recipients of the Medical Scholarship and Return Service Program (MSRS), a government initiative supporting aspiring doctors from underserved municipalities. The MSRS will fully cover their tuition, fees, and provide a generous allowance totaling Php 88,500.00.

Governor Tan also pledged her support for the remaining 22 enrollees, who will benefit from the Makabagong Doktor (MD) Program, a provincial initiative to help fund medical education. She assured that the MD scholars would receive the same financial benefits as the MSRS students, further reinforcing the provincial government’s commitment to education.

Adding to the celebration, the Provincial Government of Samar distributed new iPads to all 38 students in SIIM’s MD program to enhance their learning experience.

Congressman Jude Acidre of Tingog Partylist also spoke, emphasizing the vital link between education and community development.

“The Samar Island Institute of Medicine is a symbol of empowerment and progress. Tingog Partylist is dedicated to supporting initiatives that bring transformation to the grassroots level,” he said.

The Samar Island Institute of Medicine stands as a beacon of hope and progress for the region, promising to transform the landscape of healthcare education on the island, and ushering in a new era of growth and opportunity for Samar and its people. | PR via The Samar Chronicle
