LAOANG, Northern Samar — In a strategic move to protect coastal residents from potential sea-level surges, the Department of Public Works and Highways Northern Samar Second District Engineering Office (DPWH-NSSDEO) has completed a major flood mitigation structure in Barangay Rawis, Laoang, Northern Samar.

The DPWH completed flood mitigation structure in Brgy. Rawis, Laoang, N. Samar. (DPWH)

The newly constructed structure includes a 117-meter reinforced concrete revetment on a steel sheet pile foundation, a 117-meter concrete roadway, a 117-meter sidewalk with curb and gutter, and two reinforced concrete box culverts (RCBC) with wing walls and aprons located at Sta. 0+100.00 and Sta. 0+180.75. The project, costing Php 29,300,446.86, was funded through the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA).

Positioned along the shoreline, this robust flood barrier is designed to resist wave impacts and prevent gradual soil erosion that could endanger nearby properties. It represents a significant step in enhancing the community’s resilience to climate change by mitigating the risks of storm surge flooding.

DPWH emphasized that this project demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding coastal communities from natural disasters while contributing to climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

The structure not only fortifies defenses for local inhabitants and their properties but also adds to the aesthetic appeal of the coastline, creating an inviting space for the community.

The project was completed ahead of schedule, reflecting DPWH’s dedication to timely and efficient infrastructure development. | (dpwh8/nssdeo/rnl/jmp)
